Maryanne Scott » Yorkshire Photographer - Everyone shines in the right light

Random – wedding photography, Leeds

A few things I spotted this week on Pinterest.

I often feel this… is it just me?

I had a breakthough with running this week – and actually ran my whole  circuit and could have carried on longer!

This one made me think of Andrew, he has a really low tolerance for idiots – so you can imagine how I drive him mad sometimes!

And finally, I found this blog earlier in the week – its called “Oven in a Field” and it pokes fun at some of the most ridiculous wedding photography!   It says basically dont feel bad if you haven’t got some really cool themed weddings – its ok to take classy photos!

Lots planned for this bank-holiday weekend – so have a good one!

Christening Photography – Family photographer, Wakefield

On sunday I got my first experience of truly appalling weather at an event.  I turned up early to the christening, ready to do some “arty” shots of the church – but found myself faced with torrential rain and howling wind, I have to admit I struggled to get out of the car!

The church, St Helen’s in Sandal, Wakefield, is beautiful and with all the guests seated, the vicar started the ceremony, interspersed with jokes and audience participation, it was a real family event!  The reception afterwards was held in The Park Restaurant in the grounds of Wateron Park Hotel (stunning wedding location if you get chance to look!) and Natalie had ordered the most beautiful cake (www.cakes-by-paula.co.uk).

If you have an event coming up or a wedding and you’d like more information about the packages I offer please get in touch.

Thanks

April Catchup with Maryanne Scott Photography, Photographer, Yorkshire

April was a month of engagements, rain, gardening, a little bit of boudoir & more rain.  It was a month of unusual wedding locations, drizzle, online courses, planning a jubilee shoot and more rain.

So to catch-up…

• Back in March, Andrew built the most amazing decking in our back garden (imagine 3 levels, with railings, floating steps, built in planting areas…and you still couldn’t picture how beautiful it is)  – and we still haven’t had chance to use it – gutted.  I originally had visions of BBQ’s, parties and general fun in the sunshine, but now I’d just be grateful for it to be dry – for like half an hour…

• I met Natalie & Andy, who are currently in St Lucia getting married.  A lovely couple, who were absolutely besotted with each other.  While I’m doing engagement shoots, I like to give the couple of bit of space (while I mess around with lenses etc).  Anyway as I was just about to take the photo Andy mouthed to Natalie “you look beautiful” –  makes you feel all warm and fuzzy!

• Next I met with Andy and Jo, friends of mine, who were absolutely adamant that I wouldn’t get any “good” photos of them. Ha – is all I can say to them – view the shoot here, and look how beautiful Jo looks, especially when she’s laughing!

• The highlight of the month for me, was definitely the boudoir shoot with Rachel and Jen.  Such  a funny day, but it was also a tough day.  I had to get the girls feeling comfortable in their pants, (with a little help from some rose wine) and then find good light to show them at there best.  It was a long day  but a great experience. However on reflection I’ve decided that boudoir really isn’t for me.  Whilst I love the idea of photographing women, and making them feel and look beautiful, its just not the way I see myself going – I prefer the interaction between couples (or even families) – perhaps I should do a boudoir type shoot for couples… yeah maybe not, I think that’s an entirely different industry…

• I published a post about “unusual wedding locations in Yorkshire”, which has become my most popular blog post ever (well after the boudoir shoot – after all they did look pretty amazing…)

• I’m also in the planning stages of a bridal shoot at Middlethorpe Hall in York.  The theme is a small Jubilee wedding.  Very excited about this, but still so much to organise.  Now if anyone knows of a make-up artist, florist, wedding planner or cake maker that might like to get involved just let me know. Yep  as I said there is still so much to organise!

• I finally got out running again after my ankle injury – bought myself some snazzy new running shoes and I have no excuses {and yes I did use the word “snazzy” }. Though I have to admit to being a fair-weather runner… the slight hint of drizzle and I’m firmly rooted to the couch!

Following on from the Boudoir shoot, and the decision not to offer it anymore.  I’m also reassessing whether there are other types of photography I don’t want to do anymore.  I feel like I’ve been trying a little of everything for the last 4 years and now is the time to specialise…  Should I specialise in wedding & engagement photography (which I adore) or should I continue trying my hand at everything?  No really, I’m asking you?

And finally

Next month is going to be just as busy, I’m on holiday and its my birthday (yes the rumours are true, I will be 35), I’ve got 4 engagement sessions, a family session & various other events and outings.

Anyway thanks for reading this far, if I haven’t bored you stupid, have a look at my previous work…or maybe drop me a line.  I will always reply.  {That is unless your name is Justin and you sent me an email on Sunday asking for wedding information – unfortunately your email address was wrong so I cant reply:(}

That’s it for now, a lovely christening to come on the blog in the next couple of days, so finally just remember that everyone shines in the right light!

10 Unusual Wedding Venues in Yorkshire – Yorkshire Wedding Photographer

Early last year when I was looking for my wedding venue, I came across a few unusual places which I thought I would share with you.  They’re all in Yorkshire and weren’t ones that we found through a wedding venue directory {which tends to be the first place you start looking}:

1. Weddings and Wellies

 www.weddingsandwellies.co.uk

I came across this venue by accident, when I was looking for a photographer.  Its a farm in the beautiful countryside in Norrsithorpe in West Yorkshire and they offer marques & teepee’s {is that how its spelt} and also claim to be a green alterative to some of the more traditional venues such as hotels.

2. The Priory at Syningthwaite

I went to a wedding here last year.  Stunning is the only word I could use to describe it.  It’s literally in the middle of know-where  {though apparently not too far from wetherby} and so serene.  They have the use of a marque and also several private cottages should you wish to stay there.  I had some real wedding envy when I found out that my friend had booked it!

3. The Priests House, North Yorkshire

www.thepriestshouse.co.uk/

I loved the look of this one.  It’s in North Yorkshire, not too far from Bolton Abbey {which is gorgeous too} and would make a unique venue for a smaller wedding.

4. Hotel du Vin – Harrogate

This one was recommended by one of my followers on twitter.  {Great tip:  if you’re on twitter, ask for unusual suggestions for wedding venues – everyone is very helpful & friendly} and dont forget to follow me!

5. Yorkshire Sculpture Park

www.ysp.co.uk/weddings

The Yorkshire Sculpture Park is about 2 minutes from my house – so this was the perfect location for us.  Unfortunately I only found this one, after we had booked ours!

6. Millennium Galleries, Sheffield

This location looked like an amazing venue for a smart city wedding.  All the photos I saw looked wonderful & definitely a unique place – with easy access to Sheffield Town Centre for hotels etc.

7. Crab and Lobster

www.crabandlobster.co.uk

This was our first choice for our own wedding, however they couldnt fit us in when we wanted to do it!  Such an unusual venue.  The restaurant is amazing, and the food is to die for.  The Manor house, which you get full exclusive use of for the day is really quirky and full of vintage stuff and antiques {though Andrew said it was stuffed full of cr*p}.

8. Cannon Hall, Barnsley– www.barnsley.gov

This is definitely one of the more traditional venues, however it didnt come up on any of oursearches & having been to their kids farm with Sophie, I already knew that it was gorgeous.  Plenty of space for a marquee, or a smaller venue if you used some of the rooms in the house itself.

9. Newton Grange Farm, Gargrave, Nr Skipton

http://www.newton-grange.co.uk/wedding-events/weddings.asp

I really liked the idea of having accomodation onsite {without it being a hotel} so this venue was perfect.  There’s seperate accomodation & beautiful scenery – what more could you want?

And finally…

For one reason or another none of these venue quite fitted in with our plans for the day so in the end I had my wedding at Whitely Hall in Sheffield, which was beautiful, probably more traditional than some of the venues mentioned above, but still a lovely place to hold a small wedding.

What to wear – Engagement photography, Barnsley

I’ve got a lot of engagement photo sessions coming up over the next few months, and I’m asked what to wear almost every time!  So here is my advice…

  • Wear complimentary colours. This doesn’t mean you have to be super matchy. Lights and darks contrast well.
  • Wear solid colours (but then maybe the other person gets to wear a patterned outfit)
  • Wear heels (women) but bring flats in case I make you walk across several fields etc
  • Wear smart shoes or smart trainers (men) – nothing worse than ugly mens shoes.
  • Wear layers, cardigans, jumpers & coats (in case its cold & because it adds interest)
  • Wear accessories; jewellery, hats sunglasses, scarves etc can all add more visual appeal
  • Wear make up – now I’m not saying that if you wouldn’t normally wear much you should pile it on, but its amazing what a difference a bit of lippy & mascara can make to a portrait.
  • Wear similar colour tops/ shirts with jeans, but not necessarily the same style. (My favourite colours to photograph are always blues, whites and reds)

Don’t wear…

  • Anything you feel uncomfortable in – it will show in the images.
  • Anything that doesn’t really fit you properly (nothing worse than clothes riding up)
  • Really patterned outfits if the location of the shoot is busy (think of paisley in a forest arghhhh)
  • Small Stripes or prints – they don’t photograph well
  • T-shirts with slogans on them (unless you don’t care what people think & you want to make a statement!)

You can be as dressed up (a ballgown??) or as casual (jeans) as you like but give it some thought before the session (especially if you intend to use the photos for invitations!) and if all else fails have a look here for some inspiration… http://pinterest.com/jessicamonnich/engagement-session-wardrobe-ideas/
